Jabber, Inc. User Base Grows to More Than Four Million Seats
Combined Open Source and Commercial Jabber User Community Now Exceeds ICQ’s
DENVER, COLO. – October 15, 2003 – Jabber, Inc. today reported that the company has increased its licensed user base to over four million – up more than 30% since the beginning of 2003. Moreover, the combined commercial and open source Jabber community now boasts more users than AOL’s ICQ, widely considered to be the first mass adopted instant messaging system. Jabber, Inc. is the leading commercial provider of XMPP-based technology, including the Jabber Extensible Communications Platform (XCP), and has to date more than 100 commercial customers.

Jabber XCP is an extensible, software-based infrastructure for enterprise and carrier-class instant messaging and other presence-enabled applications. It facilitates a wide variety of real-time, presence-based communication solutions such as: secure instant messaging, workflow, knowledge management, and notification systems, dynamic content distribution, interactive gaming, customer service portals, and more. It provides a secure and private solution for internal and external communications across wired and wireless devices. Jabber XCP is based on the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP), an open protocol widely used as a common language between open source and proprietary IM systems. The protocol is expected to be ratified soon by the IETF as an Internet standard for instant messaging.

In the past eight months, Jabber, Inc. has secured numerous notable new enterprise and carrier customers including CapWIN, Earthlink, Lehman Brothers, Netsize, S1 Corporation, and Sony Corporation.

Rob Balgley, CEO and president of Jabber, Inc, stated, “Jabber, Inc.’s broad acceptance in both the enterprise and service provider markets is a testament to our platform’s architectural pedigree and the industry-leading products we produce. This year will be marked with additional achievements that will further accelerate global market adoption of XMPP and Jabber XCP.”

XMPP grew out of the Jabber open-source project, and continues to be developed and extended within both the IETF and the broader Jabber community, including the Jabber Software Foundation (JSF). The JSF reports that more than 215,000 open source XMPP servers have been deployed with a total worldwide user base of approximately 7-10 million people. According to ComScore Media Metrix, ICQ claimed a declining base of 6 million users in June of 2003.

“Surpassing ICQ is a significant milestone in the acceptance of XMPP worldwide,” said Peter Saint-Andre, executive director of the Jabber Software Foundation. “In the coming months, the JSF expects to achieve other significant milestones as XMPP moves closer to IETF ratification and as our JSF sponsor and member organizations continue to demonstrate the interoperability of XMPP with other protocols.”
