The Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) contacted Jabber, Inc.’s professional services team to develop an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) Gateway to interoperate between their Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) and IRC networks. The IRC Gateway allows Jabber XCP users to enter IRC Channels and IRC users to enter Jabber XCP-based group chat rooms. The development of the server-side component allowed users to join and administer IRC channels via a Jabber desktop client without any client modifications. A second project was recently completed to implement additional group chat room and channel security mechanisms such as password protection and invitation only participation.
