Jabber XCP 5.4 Now Available
Upgrades Add Personal Eventing, Installation Enhancements, and Increased Security

June 18, 2008 – Denver, Colo. – Jabber, Inc. today announced the 5.4 release of the Jabber Extensible Communications Platform™ (Jabber XCP™). The industry-leading, highly scalable, interoperable, and extensible presence platform now includes personal eventing capabilities, greater security for authenticating users, native compiler support, and several improvements to make installing components even more efficient.

“The latest enhancements to Jabber XCP are in line with our technical vision to build the most extensible, secure, scalable, and interoperable presence and messaging platform available,” said Joe Hildebrand, chief technology officer of Jabber. “In particular, the implementation of Personal Eventing via Pubsub extends our presence model to allow users and applications to easily publish information that might interest others. Standard examples include geographic location, activity, mood, and the current track from your music player, but PEP can be used for almost any kind of information.”

Jabber XCP enhanced its already robust functionality by adding:

  • A programmable personal eventing feature that enables the broadcast of changes in presence events and dynamic discovery of a client, device, and other entities associated with a presence and enterprise instant messaging (EIM) account. A personal eventing broadcast is tailored to the specific capabilities of the receiving client or device, and allows a user to send updates or events to contacts on the user’s roster. The personal eventing feature is an implementation of the protocols described in Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) Enhancement Protocol 0163 (XEP-0163) Personal Eventing via Pubsub (PEP) and in XEP-0115 Entity Capabilities.

  • Pluggable Authentication Module (PAM) support for the Jabber XCP controller to increase security. PAM allows the Jabber XCP configuration and administration interface to utilize the PAM authentication stack on Linux and Solaris operating systems to authenticate and authorize users.

  • Native compiler support on all platforms. The Jabber XCP server executables and libraries are compiled with the default compiler for each supported operating system version, which allows third party developers to utilize the system compiler when developing against Jabber XCP software development kits (SDKs).

  • An enhanced installer that allows existing Jabber XCP users to archive the original installation for a system restore before installing the new server.

  • Improved out-of-the-box configuration including default configuration of statistics logging and HTTP tunneling.

  • Easier integration with Microsoft Active Directory deployments via a new Active Directory component that is preconfigured for Active Directory users.
