Mobile Tornado and Jabber, Inc. Join Forces to Integrate Push to Talk and Instant Messaging

DENVER, COLO and HERZELIYA, ISRAEL – June 22, 2004 – Mobile Tornado and Jabber, Inc. announced today that they are jointly developing a mobile messaging product that combines voice, text, and availability information in a single interface. Compatible with a very wide range of handsets, the combined product will incorporate Mobile Tornado’s Push-to-Talk over Cellular (PoC) solution with the Jabber Extensible Communications Platform (Jabber XCP) for commercial instant messaging (IM) applications.

“Our strength is in interoperability and extensibility, attributes that allow us to build best-of-breed solutions with companies like Mobile Tornado,” said Mark Troyer, European Technical Director at Jabber, Inc. “Jabber XCP is an open, standards-based presence and messaging platform, designed to serve the greatest number of mobile and fixed platforms with the widest array of high value presence and IM applications.”

“Integration of IM with PTT improves the user’s experience and puts choice back into the customer’s hands,” said Maria Archer, CMO for Mobile Tornado. “The main advantage of the joint presence of IM and PTT is that it starts to realise Mobile Tornado’s vision of integrated instant communications that delivers revenue to operators and choice to customers.”

The combined product will allow customers to view their mobile address books with a variety of contact presence information such as connection status, handset information, handset state, software capabilities, mood, and location.

“The benefit of presence information to mobile customers is very similar to the benefits of desktop IM,” said Troyer. “Regardless of time, location, or device, people have an instant understanding of how to best connect with their personal and business contacts.”

Presence information for mobile address books, which are increasingly a mirror of desktop address books, can come from a variety of network sources including XMPP-based servers, consumer IM services such as Microsoft Messenger and ICQ, and any SIP-based presence service.

With more than four million licensed users, Jabber, Inc.’s Extensible Communications Platform (Jabber XCP) is one of the most widely deployed business-grade instant messaging solutions available today. It is based upon XMPP, the only IETF-approved Internet standard for presence and instant messaging.

“The wireless industry recognises that interoperability is key to the success of new services. Working alongside companies such as Jabber, Inc. is part of our strategy to provide our customers with compelling solutions,” added Maria Archer.
