DENVER, CO – March 24, 2003 – Jabber, Inc., a leading software developer
of secure instant messaging and presence-enabled communications, today announced
that it closed a $7.2 million private placement late last week. Intel Capital,
Intel’s strategic investing arm, joined existing investors France Telecom Technology
Investissements (FTTI), the technology investment vehicle of France Telecom’s
(NYSE: FTE) wholly owned France Telecom R&D, and Webb Interactive Services (OTCBB:
WEBB), which founded Jabber, Inc. in 2000.
Jean-Jacques Damlamian, France Telecom’s senior vice president for technology
and innovation, said, “Our continued investment in Jabber Inc. is symbolic of
the deepening strategic relationship between France Telecom and Jabber. Jabber
is central to our communication, instant messaging and presence strategy, and
is becoming more and more of a core element to the vision of our Wanadoo and
Orange business units.”
The Jabber commercial product and its open source counterpart, Jabber.org,
is based on the eXtensible messaging and presence protocol (XMPP), which achieved
IETF Working Group status in October of 2002 and is quickly moving towards
full
ratification.
“
Jabber, Inc. and its open architected platform represent an interoperable approach
to presence-enabled messaging," said Ron Smith, senior vice president and general
manager of Intel's Wireless Communications and Computing Group. "We share the
vision of compelling messaging solutions on high-performance devices and wish
to accelerate the availability of standards-based solutions across our client
architectures from Intel® Centrino™ mobile technology-based notebooks to Intel® PCA
based mobile phones.”
Jabber, Inc.’s commercial user base now exceeds 3 million licensed seats, and
the combined Jabber open source and commercial community of users is now close
to 10 million and growing. In the past year, significant enterprise and service-provider
customers have adopted Jabber, Inc.’s eXtensible Communications Platform, including
EarthLink, Hewlett-Packard, BellSouth, and AT&T. Jabber, Inc. also forged strategic
distribution and co-marketing partnerships with companies such as Hewlett-Packard,
webMethods and IMLogic.
“
We’re pleased to receive an investment from Intel Capital and we believe that
the reaffirmation of France Telecom as a strategic partner and Webb Interactive
as a financial partner is indicative of the strong momentum Jabber is continuing
to build,” said Rob Balgley, CEO and President of Jabber Inc. “This funding round
will permit us to accelerate our marketing and product development efforts and
achieve our financial goals on schedule.”
