DENVER, CO – DECEMBER 10, 2003 – Azusa Pacific University (APU), a Los Angeles-based comprehensive evangelical Christian university, today announced that it has selected Jabber, Inc.’s Extensible Communications Platform (Jabber XCP) to deliver presence based communications, including instant messaging, on a university-wide basis.
“Instant messaging enables faculty and students to engage in real-time transactional and transfunctional scholarship. The need for mobility and interaction both in and out of the physical classroom is a key strategy for community building within the university,” said John Reynolds, vice president for administration and information/CIO at Azusa Pacific University. “Jabber, Inc. and XMPP meet APU’s immediate needs for an Instant Messaging solution, while addressing the application integration strategies we consider central to our ability to deliver innovative and intelligent information services to our constituents over the Internet.”
Jabber XCP is a commercial platform for building enterprise- and carrier-grade presence-enabled services and instant messaging systems. It is in use by more than 4 million licensed users, representing more than 100 organizations worldwide. Jabber XCP is built on top of the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP), an open protocol based in XML that is widely used as a common denominator between open source and proprietary IM systems. The protocol is expected to be ratified early next year by the IETF as an Internet standard for instant messaging.
“Azusa Pacific represents the upper end of the learning curve we consistently see as customers move from prospect to sale,” said Tony Bamonti, Acting President for Jabber, Inc. “Solving the problem of non-federated and unsecured IM often morphs into an analysis of future development needs in the area of web services and arrives at the conclusion that an open-architected, standards-based approach to presence-based messaging best fills both current and anticipated needs.”
